About the Fillmore Merchants Association

The voice of the merchants

The Fillmore Merchants Association (FMA) serves the small and large business owners of the shops, restaurants, hotels, venues and services on Fillmore Street, from Jackson to Eddy. The oldest merchant association in San Francisco (1907), it provides a singular voice to promote the neighborhood, represent businesses at City Hall and produce signature events.

Our mission: dedicated to making the Fillmore a better place to live and do business.

What we do

Work done on behalf of every merchant

Membership supports four things that no single business could do alone.

Marketing

The Fillmore directory and map, a monthly newsletter, social media features and the illustrated shopping guide put member businesses in front of visitors and locals.

Safety & security

The FMA meets monthly with the Captain at Northern Station, quarterly with the Chief of Police and regularly with the Supervisor. When merchants have a concern, we bring it to the people who can act on it.

Street maintenance

The association works to keep Fillmore Street clean, cared for and welcoming for the businesses and people who use it.

Manage the Entertainment Zone

Fillmore Street now has an Entertainment Zone, which supports the music, theater and nightlife that make the street a destination. Learn more

The street

A neighborhood with more than a century of history

Fillmore Street became the city’s commercial center after the 1906 earthquake, grew into the home of jazz in the 1940s and 50s, and has been renewed since the 1980s as one of San Francisco’s favorite places to shop and dine. The association represents the merchants who carry that story forward.

Leadership

The people behind the association

Tim Omi

President. A lifelong Bay Area resident, Tim owns and operates several dispensaries in Lower Pacific Heights and Polk Gulch, including Bon Bon on Fillmore Street, and brought each one through San Francisco’s conditional use and discretionary review process with extensive community engagement. Tim is co-producer of the Fillmore Jazz Festival, one of the city’s largest street festivals and the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast. Tim also serves as President of the San Francisco Council of District Merchants Associations (SFCDMA), the citywide coalition of neighborhood merchant groups.

Patti Mangan

Executive Director. Patti oversees the association’s daily operations and programs, working with merchants, City agencies and event partners, and is co-producer of the Fillmore Jazz Festival. Patti also runs Imagine That Design Studio, an award-winning, WBENC-certified creative services firm celebrating 40 years of helping clients maximize the impact of their marketing.

Board of directors

Merchants leading the association

The FMA is led by a volunteer board of Fillmore Street business owners. Each one runs a business on the street.

Protecting the festival

The Fillmore Jazz Festival Preservation Fund

The Fillmore Jazz Festival is free to everyone, and it now costs about $500,000 a year to produce safely, with stages, sound, public safety, sanitation, permits and artist support. The Preservation Fund is a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to give the festival a permanent foundation of support.

What the Fund is for

  • Sustaining the free festival year after year
  • Paying musicians fairly and bringing in national artists alongside Bay Area talent
  • Preserving and teaching the jazz history of the Fillmore
  • Investing in the neighborhood’s businesses, artists and community
  • Building long-term reserves so the festival is protected for the future
